Mimi Macpherson says, “Kevin Rudd not so hot on climate change?”

I thought we had a government that was trying to do something responsible about the environment, but our prime minister Mr Kevin Rudd has done a backflip on his proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme until 2013.

Admittedly it was a flawed scheme where our big polluting companies would be subsidised millions of dollars in a vain attempt to reduce Australia’s carbon emissions but at least it was a show of respect that something had to be done. If not for us but once again for our children’s children and for humanity as a whole.

It seems Kevin Rudd is concerned there is not enough support for this kind of policy as he ran into a lot of opposition for his proposal especially from the opposition leader Tony Abbot. But to abandon this whole exercise until 2013 is an insult to the Australian people who believed this issue was of strong concern to him and his government. I am gob-smacked.

Apparently Mr Rudd has not listened to the average aussie who is shouting for him to take every opportunity to DO SOMETHING NOW. Nor can he be listening to the 4000 plus scientists who advise we need to halve our carbon pollution by 2020.

How can we even hope to achieve this by 2020 if we are going to do nothing until 2013 ?

The only good thing that can come of this is that maybe we may have a better look at how we as a nation can dramatically reduce our carbon footprint. Most certainly it would be better to levy a carbon tax on the polluting industries so that sustainable energy industries have a chance to be competitive. Even better why doesn’t the government help fund the development of clean energy industries, so that in the future we wont even be considering giving our taxpayers money to the big polluters ?

And is  the government truly considering 2 new coal burning stations for New South Wales ? Really ? Either way it seems our prime minister has gone soft on the whole climate issue as he doesn’t believe we care enough.

Mr Rudd, this is an urgent problem and we do care ! I am appalled at your apparent apathy on this issue. Instead of doing nothing for the next three years why don’t you at least  impose a tax on polluting industries and put that money into developing clean energy technology.  WE as Australians could be world leaders in this field if we had the funds to move forward in this arena. It would create many , many jobs , and it could be an industry that in the future could save Australia in the face of future global economic downturn
please let Mr Rudd and our politicians know you care too.
